12/30/2023 0 Comments Myst xbox oneAnd in complete and blissful solitude we will find ourselves solving the many mysteries and riddles that are hidden in this island, while trying to find a way to escape from this rather bizarre place (or parallel universe). There are no characters to interact with, it’s just us and nature. It is nice to hear the wind blowing on the trees and the waves crashing against the rocks, while in the distance you can hear the chirping of some seagulls: on the island, apart from us, there is no other living being. The landscapes and settings created by Cyan thirty years ago seemed to come directly from a surrealist painting: Myst has lost none of its original charm even in 2021 and, in a few moments, he finds us exploring an earthly paradise characterized by dense vegetation, protruding rocks, sand, water and mysterious constructions (including a submerged wooden vessel). And we stop here, to avoid anticipating too much. ![]() Only the player can help them: how? Solving a series of puzzles and riddles that will allow him to discover the secret that is hidden in this island. There is no doubt that the couple of Miller brothers were inspired by some theories on the parallel worlds of quantum mechanics (the famous multiverse): the possibility of traveling between the ages it was nothing more than a clever ploy to entice the player to solve specially designed puzzles / traps.Īnd after a few minutes of exploration we find ourselves getting to know the two brothers Sirrus and Achenar, trapped in different books (in parallel universes) and eager to be freed. The gimmick of the book (there are two types, one linking and one descriptive) was wisely exploited to make the player travel through the different eras present in the game. Predictably, Myst’s success in the wake of 7th Guest gave origin of a new trend (that of interactive adventures) and several official sequels and multiple adaptations, without forgetting a long trail of clones: the last episode of the series is dated 2005 (Myst V: End of Ages), while the last remake / remastered in chronological order is that which appeared a couple weeks ago on the Xbox Game Pass service for Microsoft consoles and also available for PC. Cyan’s adventure was published by a rather prolific and active software in the eighties and nineties: the American Broderbund which boasted in its palmarès the Prince of Persia series by Jordan Mechner and that Carmen Sandiego, in addition to having had in its ranks as employee a brilliant programmer of the caliber of Will Wright (Sim City, The Sims and “sim anything”). ![]() Myst was a very special game and had succeeded in the feat of bring you closer to the world of computers and video games even people who would never have used a mouse or keyboard to play games for any reason. The first multimedia title signed by the Miller brothers (Cyan was the name of the company they founded) was “something” that it transcended the simple concept of audio / visual experience, a minimalist adventure at times poetic and refined that had nothing to do with everything that had been created up to that time. Thinking back to Myst in 2021 makes a certain impression, we do not deny it. An absolute record for that period that managed to hold out until the arrival of a cyclone named The Sims (by the way, here’s our review of The Sims 4). ![]() In addition to becoming one of the most important games of the time (for the innovative use of 3D rendering and CD-ROM technology), for nearly seven years it proved to be the best-selling title on PC with six million copies. Myst was created by pair of brothers Rand and Robyn Miller on Macintosh using Apple’s HyperCard hypertext programming tool and was released in 1993. Myst was a praise of interactive slowness, a masterpiece that has managed to withstand the inevitable passage of time and fashions, even if there were no enemies to wreak havoc with a nail gun or objects to move with a gravity gun. A title in complete antithesis with the genres that depopulated in that videogame period (we are talking about the nineties) and, above all, in sharp contrast with the medium that dominated the scene, dear and old television. In a world dominated by speed and hyper-connectivity, it’s hard to believe that for many years the best-selling PC game was something different from the usual Doom, Diablo, Warcraft or Half-Life.
